Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is science- or research-based nutrition?
When I say my recommendations are research-based, I mean they’re backed by real science, not fads or guesswork. I use proven studies and the latest equine nutrition research to make sure every plan is safe and effective. This way, you can feel confident that your horse’s diet is built on evidence you can trust. At the same time, I always tailor the plan to your horse’s unique needs, so it’s not only grounded in science but also practical for everyday barn life.
What is your approach to equine nutrition?
My approach to equine nutrition is both science-based and practical. I use current research to ensure every plan meets your horse’s nutrient requirements, but I also focus on creating feeding strategies that fit seamlessly into real-world barn life. I believe nutrition should go beyond just meeting basic needs, it should actively support health, performance, and long-term wellbeing. Every horse is unique, so I tailor each plan to the individual rather than relying on one-size-fits-all solutions.
What kinds of horses do you work with?
I work with all types of horses: young horses just starting out, competition horses in training, broodmares, and retired companions. No matter their age, breed, or activity level, every horse benefits from proper nutrition. A balanced diet supports growth, performance, recovery, and overall well-being. That’s why I customize each plan to fit your horse’s individual needs and goals.
Are your recommendations influenced by any feed or supplement companies?
My recommendations are completely independent. I do not receive commissions or incentives from feed or supplement companies. Any products I suggest are based solely on scientific evidence and what best meets your horse’s individual needs. If I mention a specific brand, it’s because it aligns with the nutrient requirements identified for your horse, not because of outside influence. My goal is to provide unbiased, research-based guidance you can trust.
How is this different from veterinary care?
Veterinarians are essential for diagnosing and treating medical conditions, while my role as an equine nutrition consultant is to focus specifically on your horse’s diet. Most veterinary programs include only limited training in nutrition, so my advanced education and research in this area allow me to provide in-depth, science-based feeding guidance. I don’t replace your veterinarian, but instead I can work alongside them to ensure your horse’s nutrition complements their overall health care.
Services
Do you offer in-person and remote consultations?
Yes, I offer both. In-person consultations are available for clients in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I can visit your farm and evaluate your horse and feeding program directly. Travel fees may apply for farms outside the immediate area. For clients further away—or for those who prefer the convenience—I also provide remote consultations via phone, video call, and email. Both options include a thorough review of your horse’s history, diet, and goals, with a customized nutrition plan tailored to their needs.
How do I know which service is right for me and my horse?
Choosing the right service depends on your goals and your horse’s needs. If you want a comprehensive, fully balanced diet tailored to your horse, the Full Diet Evaluation is the best place to start. If you’re looking for ongoing support and adjustments over time, the Six-Month Program may be a better fit. If you just want general guidance without a full ration calculation, the General Diet Evaluation is a good option. For returning clients who’ve already completed a Full or General Diet Evaluation, a Check-In is perfect for updates or new concerns. And for barns managing multiple horses, the Barn Consultation provides customized feeding advice. Still unsure? Reach out by email and we’ll be happy to help you decide which service makes the most sense for you and your horse.
How do I schedule a consultation?
To schedule with us, please purchase the service you wish to complete. Then, you will receive an email with a link to either our New Client Intake Form or our Returning Client Intake Form (also available here). After completing these forms, we will reach out to schedule a time for either a phone, video, or in-person consultation.
Can you work alongside my veterinarian?
Absolutely! We work collaboratively with your veterinarian to ensure your horse’s nutrition complements their overall health care. Our recommendations are intended to support veterinary guidance, not replace it, so you’ll always have your vet’s expertise as part of your horse’s care team. To have us work with your vet, please complete either a Full or General Diet Evaluation, and then book a Returning Client Check-In and mention in the form that you would like us to call your veterinarian.
