About Balanced Stride

Hi, I’m Kal O’Reilly

I have been passionate about horses for as long as I can remember. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Colorado State University, where I first found the potential for using nutrition as a tool to improve the health, performance, and welfare of our horses. During this time I also worked as a groom and assistant trainer, which gave me hands-on experience in putting nutrition plans into practice in everyday barn life.

I went on to complete my master’s in Equine Nutrition. My thesis investigated the use of antioxidant supplementation in young horses to prevent exercise-induced oxidative stress and musculoskeletal discomfort, providing insight into how targeted nutrition can help horses adapt to training and reduce injury risk.

During my master’s program, I also worked extensively in extension and community outreach, teaching horse owners about the fundamentals of equine nutrition as well as more specialized topics, from feed evaluation to managing all types of horses. This experience reinforced my passion for translating scientific research into practical guidance that owners can implement in their barns to improve their horse’s health and welfare.

I’m passionate about functional nutrition, meaning using feed not just to meet basic requirements, but to actively support your horse’s health, performance, and longevity. Staying up to date on the latest research is important to me, so every recommendation I make is backed by science and tailored to your horse’s individual needs.
